I have taught the idea of spinning to K - 3rd grade. It was just an hour of so introduction to spinning. Drop spindles never worked for the kids but hooked sticks do. First I made them of bent coathangers, later I went to a machine shop where a craftsman made me a tool for bending thick wire into the correct shape. These later ones looked much better and worked somewhat better. With K it was a team effort, one child to turn the stick and the other to draw the fiber. After Ks had the idea, most were able to do it by themselves. I have noticed that many adults lack or are not willing to put in the effort into learning how to use a drop spindle, so it makes sense that kids can't do it easily either, but the hooked sticks are successful enough to keep their attention and effort working. They have to be told to put them away after the lesson.
