Like Steve says, without a goodly amount of twist sock yarns don't last nearly as long. On my feet (I walk a *lot*!) I've worn out softly spun socks (NOT spun by me) in a couple of wearings but my semi-worsted spun 3-ply socks have lasted up to 7 years with only a little bit of repair. I also knit tightly on small needles so I can't feel the stitches.
