Holly~
Do you wear your socks every day (the same pair)? I'm
not arguing that your socks wear well, but it's
misleading to say you wear them every day for five
months if in fact you have (for example) 7 pairs that
you wash once a week. Also, again not disputing that
your soft yarn wears well, I'd be interested in
comparing socks made from that yarn to socks made from
a higher twist yarn under similar conditions w/ equal
frequency. Obviously, fiber makes a huge difference,
and when I used to spin mostly with BL and BL crosses
I put much less twist into the yarns. Now I work
mostly w/ merino and fibers of a similar length & my
singles are typically overspun by some people's
standards; nevertheless my plied yarn is (usually) a
balanced yarn and I'm much happier with it than I used
to be before I started overspinning. Even w/ BL I now
put much more twist in, and I like my yarns better.
You have a much more professional approach to spinning
than I (I save my perfectionism for writing, music and
teaching; fiber is what I do for Fun & Therapy) but I
feel my yarns compare well w/those of my peers (well
enough, anyway). Bottom line, of course, is are you
happy with what you produce (and I always feel that
you are supremely satisfied w/ your efforts), so I'm
not trying to convert anyone to anything. However, it
would be interesting, though perhaps impractical, to
to a real comparison over time of products made from
yarn w/ a low angle of twist v. those made from yarn
with a higher degree of twist, w/ comparable fiber and
conditions of use.
