Hello fellow fiberaddicts, I was typing in a chat room conversing with some friends. A chatter, in Iraq, asked what a spinning wheel was. I did a brief explanation and he didn't understand. I buried him with a long explanation complete with urls, lol. He says it is a skill long gone there. Knitting with many colors is very popular, though. Now I am curious about the history of wheels through out the Middle East and N. Africa. I have seen pictures and heard of drop spindles. My encyclopedia says spinning wheels were introduced to Europe through the Middle East. Spinning wheels make sense if you are settled, which people have been for a few millennium there. So were the wheels similar to the Rio Grande wheel? I have seen very old similar wheels from Mexico. What is the history of the Navajo spindle? Turan
