Whatever you choose, check first how far away you need to go for fresh ram blood to keep your herd's quality up. If there are no other breeders anywhere near where you live - A. That breed doesn't do well in your area and you might want to consider another B. If the breed DOES fare well in your climate and you need to travel more than 300 miles to find a good ram, your costs will be perhaps more than you had in mind.

Indiscriminate cross breeding (ie. using a local ram who "looks good") will ultimately make your choice of a starting breed meaningless.
