Lanolin wouldn't harden over time, if there wasn't much of it to begin with.
I think we need to remember that we're talking sweaters that were spun out of 
those famous longwool sheep, that-weren't-merinos. There wouldn't be much 
grease. I'm also sure that the cleanest fleece was chosen for fisherman 
sweaters. After all, who would want to work with a dirty fleece?
Just like today, any dirt would come out with the combing, spinning, and the 
last washing of skeins.
