At some point I read, but I haven't been able to find it again, darn it!, that Merino and crosses have a waxy substance in addition to lanolin, which is why the wash water needs to be so much hotter than for coarser breeds.

Definitely finewools are harder to wash all the potentially sticky stuff out, but lanolin is in all wool, and if you don't get it *all* out, it will let you know about it later :)
