I have a (mostly) Wensleydale ram fleece that I've washed and dyed,
and is too greasy to use. It's recently shorn, and had a lot of
black, sort of oily muck on it. I have used Synthrapol, dish
detergent, boiling water, and ammonia in the rinse water (which did
some weird things to the Procion dyes). Has anyone seen this, or
have suggestions for removing what seems to be permanent
oil/grease?
Thanks -
Nora

Dear Nora,
We have a page on wool washing, which may or may not help?
http://www.gfwsheep.com/washingwool/woolwashing.html
below is a paragraph from our page:
For fleece with a very high grease/lanolin content you may want to ad
into that first soap soak 2/3 cup of soda ash to the wash load.
Combine the soap, hot water, and ash and mix well. Soda ash is NOT
the same thing as "washing soda". Soda ash is chemically (atomically
different) 10 times stronger than washing soda. It is VERY basic, as
in something is either acidic, neutral, or basic in pH. Wool does
well in acid, but will disintegrate over time in a basic solution.
Nothing is going to be very good for the dye ... you may have to dye again.
