Hi Anita
My husband is a furniture maker, so has supplied me with a variety of wood
sawdust and shavings. I've used mahogany and walnut, both of which gave a
nice brown (the mahogany a reddish brown, almost rust color) I have a rug I
wove many years ago which contains some yarn dyed this way and those areas
have remained colorfast.
So you might try a cabinet maker shop in your area - most have plenty of spare
sawdust! :)
Will be interested to hear from others about getting a good brown with natural
materials, particularly walnut hulls.
wrnk, you're right! It's a great thing to have a forum where we can discuss a
topic like the precise tuning of a spinning wheel, with complete understanding
from others (and no fear of being labeled weird)

I'm planning a project that needs 4 colors - will be wool. I have madder,
Osage orange and logwood dye packets. Now I need a brown. Any suggestions
will be most appreciated. It would be lovely if I could gather something
wild
around here in Northern NH USA, but don't really think there's anything
available that will give me a brown. Is it about time for walnut hulls to be
ready and if so does anyone have a contact to purchase some? TIA Anita
