Other vertically-challenged AVL weavers I know have attached blocks of wood to 
the treadles to make them easier to reach.

I'm not sure which AVL model you have, Holly, but if it the standard production 
(16-shaft) or technical (24-shaft) version, the cloth beam is at the BACK of 
the loom (not by the bench).  The woven cloth goes around the sandpaper beam, 
around the rollers, under the shafts and to the back where it rolls up for 
storage.

Which model do you have?  Perhaps I can help.  I have a 16-shaft 60-inch 
production AVL from the 1980's.
