Actually, mercerized cotton, silk, Tencel, mixed warps and all wools work great
on the sandpaper beam. The only things I don't run across the sandpaper beam
are chenille (it strips off the little fuzzies and leaves only the core), and
loosely woven alpaca. I've done okay with alpaca at a normal to tight set and
beat, but when loosely woven, it distorted going across the sandpaper beam.
But the sandpaper beam is fabulous for everything else.

AVL provides a squishy, rubbery cover for the sandpaper beam for use with
chenille. I have one, but have also used rubber shelf liner (or the stuff that
goes under rugs) in a pinch.

Holly, it's purpose is to allow two different tensions -- one between the warp
beam (sectional or not, I have both) and the sandpaper beam, and a second
tension between the sandpaper beam and the cloth storage system. The first is
usually tighter than the second. On my loom, the warp tension is controlled by
an arm weight attached to the brake on the warp beam, while the cloth storage
tension is controlled by a hanging weight on the right side of the loom.

Hope this helps.

Amy
