I used to do alot of top including merino which all dyed very well 
for me.  Two things come to mind.  First is that I completely wetted 
the fiber and then it was spun to take excess water out (in laundry 
bags).  Second I mixed very concentrated dye stocks- I think 3%. 
It's tricky as you have to put the acid in the dye stock when it is 
mixed.  If you want more diluted or rather paler color it has to be 
diluted with acid in that water.

But it was rare that any white showed and I could get some pretty dark colors.
