About 16 years ago we lost a cat to a particularly grisly death after he had one dose of ivermectin for ear mites. The other cat was unaffected. I have never found out if the dose was off or what. My dad was dying at the time and I just didn't have the energy or time to pursue it, but our cats do not get ivermectin. I have no other animals to worry about, but would research carefully before using it. Our vet did say that it was known to cross the blood/brain barrier in collie dogs, but that our case was the first he knew of in a cat. I'll echo that no drug is completely safe - some are worth using in spite of risk, some are not.
