I agree with what you are saying, Holly, especially about socks.
My first pair were made of superwash handspun Merino, not enough twist
and the needles were not small enough. That pair lasted about one month
and it took longer than that to knit. My Mum makes me socks from
self-patterning yarn by Regia and others on the the knitting machine.
These have superwash Merino, plus nylon and since I have at least 10
pair and my Mum knows her stuff I have yet to wear out a pair. I supply
her with the yarn and she returns socks. Does it get any better than
that? She is a young 85 so I need lots of socks from her.
I teach spinning, felting, soap making and other crafts and have found
that if I teach at a level understood by the average 8 year old, in
plain English, that it works for older students as well. This means,
proper procedure, good preparation and answering all and any questions.
Beginners might as well start out correctly, no matter how young or how
old. Actually I find the 8 year olds to be very intelligent and
receptive. Some of the older ones have already picked up some
misconceptions, or "That is the only way to do it" ideas. I usually say,
"This is how I do this", usually indicating that there may be other ways
to do it.
BTW, I have just noticed an upsurge of talk on Fibernet. Isn't it great!
