I went to a five day sock workshop with Judith
MacKenzie McCuin a few years ago and she had so many
interesting things to say and to show us- including a
few examples of well worn socks from her collection.
She does agree with most of what you say Holly. It
was great to see socks knit with so called delicate
fibres (I think it was cashmere), but spun in a tight
three ply (or was it a four-ply cable) and knit on
small needles. The socks were obviously well worn but
still hole free because of the methods used. She also
had some made from a harsh feeling fleece but the
finished socks were pleasant on the feet because of
the tight knitting. As you might imagine in such a
long workshop, she had a lot to say about materials
used, methods that stood the test of time, myths to
break away from, and much much more. She writes for
Spin Off all the time and a year or two ago
incorporated a lot of that information in an article.
I am at work so can't check which issue.

I have every Spin Off magazine ever printed (including
some of the ones that were in a newspaper format) and
I cannot say that the early ones are that great. The
best ones were those that I bought when I first
started spinning in 1990 but I wonder if that is just
that they suited me at that stage of my spinning? I
am a very technical spinner now and that kind of
spinning is well covered in Maber Ross's books.

One of the most interesting projects in the Canadian
masterspinner classes was when we were given four bits
of commercial yarn and figured out how to reproduce
them. I learned a lot from that.
