In Deb Menz's book, Color in Spinning, she tells how to take a bat and form
a continous roving.
You start near one corner on the short side of the bat. Tear a strip down
the one side however wide you want it. Tear it ALMOST off but not
completely. The remaining distance should equal the width of the strip.
Then turn the bat. Again start at the top, but over far enough that you can
tear down and have a strip as wide as the first. Tear almost to the bottom
again. Continue to turn and tear until you've torn the whole bat.
Take the strip that you've torn and attenuate it, thinning it until it is
the thickness that you want. Then spin!
It's hard to describe this without pictures but if you get Deb Menz's book,
you'll see what I mean. It works very well for bats of different fibers.
I've used it with wool that I've dyed different colors. and with blends of
fibers on the drum carder.
