the best sheep breeds and fleeces IMHO come from the South Island - the colder the better.....I am not in the South but the city with the biggest population in the country approx 1.4million and because the square kilometrage of the area is quite small we are cheek to jowl. However, a pal of mine has a small lifestyle block about 30km from here so there are some sheep being farmed for spinning in the city region......there is a farm park fairly close to town as well @ Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill (the tree has gone, political controversy some years ago!) http://www.cornwallpark.co.nz/
right now ticking about on Statistics NZ Friday 6 June just after 6pm we are 4,267,027 pop. And the whole country will fit into the state of Colorado. We are a day ahead of most American countries as well so yep my w/end is here! (and it was the last day of lectures for Semester, study/exam break in the fortfront!) the only shearable usable fibre in the city but I don't think you can really get a lot here......are the dreaded pesty possum. In the country areas the going rate for the fur is good money as the world starts to want possum/wool sweaters and the like. I don't think we have any on the loose right now as they have trick with citrus fruit - leave the skins dangling on the branch with innards all eaten out! probably more than you needed to know......am now going to get a beer and sit in front of box, watch a couple of American shows and possibly do some spinning cathy in New Lynn, out west in Waitakere City, Auckland region http://www.waitakere.govt.nz/default.asp I don't know what the key to success is, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.
