Dear Chris Your story of the choreographer counting 8 instead of seven (by stressing both syllables of sev-en as beats) reminds me of a choir rehearsal at University, when I became aware that a passage in the Durufle "Requiem" (written in 7/8 if I remember rightly?) was actually being sung with 8 beats due to the conductor's beat. As is usual in a fairly fastish 7/8 passage, he was beating three beats, as in 1+2+3++ 1+2+3++ ... only his last "elongated" beat of each bar was extending *just* a little bit too much and the entire choir was singing a straight bar of 4/4. I kept waiting for him to correct himself - after all, he was one of my conducting tutors! - but in vain.
At the end of the rehearsal I decided to question why he was allowing the 7/8 passage to get out of time. He wasn't aware of the problem, and when I conducted and sang it for him, he couldn't see (or hear) the problem! I remember me conducting, him singing, and vice versa to try and get him to hear what was so obvious to me, but he just couldn't get it! Which is why we performed the passage incorrectly on the concert. (Probably also a contributing factor to my degree grade! Moral of the story: don't try to correct your tutors, no matter how wrong they get!!) Of course, Finale wouldn't do that sort of thing, because the playback engine is far superior (and mathematically rigid) than we are. Or, rather, it is when virtual memory is turned off! (heh heh heh! ... knew I could work in some Finale content somehow!)
