I don't dispute your larger point, but I think it's difficult to argue that "envelope-pushing is almost entirely absent from rock today" when Radiohead is one of the most popular rock bands in the world. "Exception that proves the rule," sure, but still...

Just thought I'd (uncharacteristically) inject a little note of optimism.
