To answer Hal's question about that piece... I haven't seen Brubeck's
originals, but an arrangement I once played was all in 9/8 (except for the
4/4 solo section).  To describe the grouping, it merely stated (2+2+2+3) on
the first bar and (3+3+3) on the fourth bar.  The rest of the piece
delineated the beat-groups with beams.
