I note with no small enthusiasm that in MacFin2004b, leaving the message bar on no longer causes Mass Edit and large plugin operations to slow to a crawl.

Mind you, it's still slower with the Message Bar on. It's just faster than it was. Hopefully, this means they're working on the problem and eventually, there will be no speed hit at all when the Message Bar is visible.
