The other thing that can't be forgotten is that the height of the whole
font is based on the height of the tallest character. In the case of
text fonts, this is not a big deal since all characters are mostly
either 1 size (lowercase) or the other (uppercase). This is why finale
uses the Font Annotation files to know exactly how tall each character
is. There's a huge difference between the staccato character and the
Treble ottava clef character...

I disagree that it is a limitation.  The various notation fonts are 
designed to work with the software with which they are provided for 
specific purposes.  If I understand him correctly, Charles is trying to 
use the font for something which it will do, but for which it was not 
designed, and for which it's not the best tool.  Kind of like using a 
ten pound sledge hammer to open a can of beans; yes, you can do the job,

but it's easier with a can opener.
