Theoretically not, but... It occasionally happens that you need to hard reset the machine. At least in my case (Wallstreet Powerbook) the machine will definitely not boot into OS X after a hard reset. It may be possible to use an emergency boot CD with OS 9 and XPF installed, I never tried this. If I were you I'd set a minimum partition aside for OS 9 with XPF and leave it that way. This partition does not need to be within the first 8 GB, whereas your OS X boot partition should be (theoretically it is possible to use a helper disk with XPF, but this still means that you need to have _a_ partition inside the first 8GB (better make it 7.5 to be sure, I had to repartition moving from 10.1 to 10.2 because Jaguar turned out pickier on this).
