Hi Philip,

XPostFacto does not, in fact, require OS 9 -- it has a native OS X version, BUT...

If you try to install Panther on a stock G3, you will get a kernel panic error when you try to boot. So you will need a bootable OS 9 system folder so you have something to boot into. Once you run XPostFacto the first time, it installs the correct files to resolve the kernel panic, and if all goes well, you're good to go in OS X 10.3 from then on. You can then delete the OS 9 System Folder if you really want to.

However, I would recommend keeping a minimal bootable OS 9 System Folder on your HD -- if not for Classic, than for emergencies. For instance, installing 10.3.2 broke XPostFacto support, and we were back to the kernel panics for a few days until Ryan came out with a new version. It's possible this could happen again. Since our beige G3s are officially unsupported, that's just how it goes.

Oh, one more thing -- the beige's built-in video isn't supported in OS 10.3. You need to use a Radeon or Radeon 7000.

Hello Mac users,

I'm thinking about installing 10.3 via XPostFacto on my stock G3 (currently running 10.2.8 with no OS 9). I see from the notes that XPostFacto requires OS 9. Is that still true if I don't want to use OS 9?

It wouldn't be a problem for me to temporarily install OS 9 for the purposes of installing Panther with XPostFacto. I have disks for 9.1 and 9.2. However, what I can't tell is if I would have to leave it on the machine in order to successfully use 10.3.

Thanks for any comments,
