Hi Andrew,
I assume you've already ruled out everything except pending catastrophic hardware failure for your internal HD.
Step One would be to get an external FireWire drive at least as big as your HD. Neptune makes a 40GB FireWire drive that you can get here for $99.99:

This drive also happens to come with Retrospect Express, a backup utility that will help you rescue your data from your ailing HD.
Step Two would be to figure out if/when/how to replace your internal HD. Since FireWire drives are bootable, you could possibly even simply ignore the wonky internal drive and use the external drive as your main HD. That would probably be okay, although leaving a failing drive inside your iMac makes me nervous, and I think I'd probably want to replace it. I'm not sure if that's something you can do yourself, though. Is it even possible to open the bottom of the iMac and remove the HD? What kind of HD does the iMac use -- a standard 3.5" drive, or one of the smaller 2.5" notebook drives? I presume it's just a regular IDE connection?
You might try calling the people at Other World Computing (800-275-4576) and telling them that you would like to replace the internal HD on a flat-panel iMac. They would almost certainly be able to tell you whether this is something you can do yourself, and, if so, what product you need.
Regards,
- Darcy

The hard drive on my dual-boot iMac is about to crash. Nobody seems to be offering free Mac hardware advice online anymore, so can anyone on the list advise me? It's a 38 GB drive w. ca. 8 GB of data on it. I need to both recover the data (hopefully in one seamless lump) and replace the drive. Your thoughts?
