Really? Lyric tool works well if you know what you're doing, or if
you never do anything complicated, but it has lots of pit-traps that
the unwray can fall into. And there are failings, too, such as
control over hyphen behavior.

prompting David to rejoin:

Well, as much as I complained about lyrics in my first big project with them (in August 2002), now that I learned from all the gurus here on the list, I find it pretty darned easy to use. The main point:

 DON'T USE TYPE INTO SCORE

Once you figure that out, it's pretty easy to use.

which I must say, does not match my experience at all. After several years of creating choral music in various layout patterns, I find that for initial entry of simple lyrics, and for editing which changes the total number of syllables assigned to notes contained in a particular staff, type into score is works quite well. For other things, for examle, adding a special initial initial letter, or for inserting a special character into the middle of a word, the edit lyrics dialog box is the method of choice, and if I am copying a block of lyrics from one place to another, where I am going to be keeping the syllabic patterns intact, or in the instance where I am assigning the same set of syllables to multiple sets of notes, then "click assignment" is the tool of choice.

The real problem with the lyrics system, in my view, (and this is probably true of other systems, as well) is the fact that there is no place where the details of how the system actually works are provided, and there should be. There should be, either on the web site, or in the user manual, or someplace, the information that in the portion of the file in which the lyrics are stored, that lyrics are stored by line, in the order in which the first syllables in the respective lines were entered, so that if the first syllables in the soprano, alto, tenor 1, tenor 2, and bass lines were entered in the order bass, alto, tenor 2, soprano, tenor 1, then this is the order that the lines of lyrics will appear in the lyrics box. The information should also be there that this order can be over-ridden by using "click into score", as it is possible to write the syllables of any text in reverse order (back to front) and have the syllable appear in proper order in the score (front to back). It is also possible using "click into score" to have syllables in the lyric box which do not ordinarily appear in the score, to assign multiple syllables to the same word, and assign multiple words to the same syllable.
