I know that when I have used type into score I have run into problems in editing the lyrics afterwards and in repairing mistakes I have made. I stopped using it after repeatedly trying to use it and not being able to make it work correctly. I simply use the Edit Lyrics and Click Assign and have never had another problem.
OK, but the problem is not with type into score, it is with the edit dialog box, which does not properly adjust syllable assignments when one uses the edit dialog box in a manner which changes the total syllable count. I suspect that, since both type into score, and edit lyrics / click assignment both appear to create a link between a specific note and a specific syllable, that if you opened a copy of a score in which you assigned the lyrics with your preferred method, and attempted to use the edit lyrics dialog box in a way that changed the syllable count, that you would find exactly the same problems as you found when you attempted to edit lyrics when you used type into score.
But it doesn't work easily for everybody and that was the point -- Finale's developers don't always implement things in ways that all users can make work.
I would suggest instead that Finale's documentation specialists have not done a good job in explaining just how the developers implemented certain features, making it difficult for a user to know how something is done, so that it can be more easily corrected when something goes wrong.
