Well, as much as I complained about lyrics in my first big project with them (in August 2002), now that I learned from all the gurus here on the list, I find it pretty darned easy to use. The main point:

  DON'T USE TYPE INTO SCORE

Once you figure that out, it's pretty easy to use.

[The lyrics subsystem] hasn't been overhauled, but the point in bringing it up was that it was implemented so poorly that a very major and to many people a very useful aspect can't be used -- Type Into Score was not properly implemented, is extremely quirky to use and very frustrating until you learn DON'T USE IT.

and I'd ask some examples to explain this "quirky" behavior, as type into score seems pretty straightforward to me, Select a lyric type (verse, chorus, section), and number, and type the syllable below the note to which it is to be sung. Wrong syllable typed to the wrong note? Just backspace away the characters in the syllable, and once all of the characters in a particular syllable are removed, it automatically progresses back to the previous syllable.
If the allegedly quirky behaviour is that when one uses the massmover copy function to copy a selection of music to which lyrics are attached, and they wind up in an unexpected place, it would seem to me that this is a problem of either the copy function, and / or the documentation, not the type into score portion of the lyrics subsystem..

I know that when I have used type into score I have run into problems in editing the lyrics afterwards and in repairing mistakes I have made. I stopped using it after repeatedly trying to use it and not being able to make it work correctly. I simply use the Edit Lyrics and Click Assign and have never had another problem.

And whenever anybody has run into problems with type into score, as soon as I have suggested that they use the Edit Lyrics dialogue to enter the lyrics and then use click assign to place them they haven't had any problems.

If you've never had a problem with type-into-score, that's fine. that means you've found a way of making it work.

But it doesn't work easily for everybody and that was the point -- Finale's developers don't always implement things in ways that all users can make work.
