I use exactly this type of setup with my laptop, and Finale; I use the Midiman Oxygen-8 USB controller, connected through a USB port. Although the Oxygen 8 is supposed to be able to be powered through the MIDI port, this will not work on my laptop; attempting to power through the USB port causes the system to hang up. If I use independant power, either through batteries, or through a connection to a wall outlet I have no problem, and it is no problem for me to carry a couple of packages of AA batteries, which is what the Oxygen-8 requires..I shall be taking my Winfin 2004 equipped HP laptop (using Windows XP) away on a composition course shortly, and want to be able to use a MIDI keyboard for Speedy entry. The laptop lacks the game port that I use on my desktop to connect a MIDI keyboard to it, but has USB2. There are products (in particular the Keystation 49 from Midiman of Arcadia, CA) that are claimed to provide MIDI information via USB (and can be powered by it). Has any of you used this hardware set-up? My concern is whether Finale will be able to find the keyboard via USB.
As to the difference: I suspect that the Keystation is larger than my Oxygen 8; my unity has two octaves and a semitone; I suspect the Keystation 49 is four octaves and a semitone.
