Noel, that's one of the reasons why I still prefer double-spacing after a period in any font, even if it's not traditional typesetting practice (and considered just indescribably barbaric by many who care about such things).

This debate reminds me of the prescriptivist vs. descriptivist grammar wars -- it's amazing to me how emotionally attached people become to Their Way of Doing Things.

to which I would note that I was taught that the reason for double spacing after the dot after a sentence was to make it easy for the reader to distinguish between the dot as a signal for an abreviation ("Mr. Smith"), and the dot as a signal for a full stop.
