You should check your Software Update and Date & Time settings. In the former, you can turn off "Check for updates," and in the latter, "Set Date & Time Automatically."
I actually want the former functionality, and would not mind if the iMac occasionally went online to look for updates--but now it's going online and doing nothing at all. The Date & Time setting is already unchecked, so that's not the problem.
