I recently heard a discussion on this very subject - whether R in B was jazz or not. Several wildly different recordings were called upon as witnesses. The conclusion was that when it was played by Jack Splatt's Jazz Band it was jazz and when it was played by Joe Soap's Symphony Orchestra it wasn't.
