I find it incomprehensible that anyone should complain about spending
$100 on an annual upgrade. That's only $2 a week for goodness sake. If
you are not "a professional engraver who makes their living with Finale"
are you hoping for charitable status?
You keep harping on about this "escrow" issue. Unfortunately there are
unscrupulous people who steal software, so systems are devised to
discourage theft. I wish I didn't need a key to get into my house, but I
don't make a fuss about it.
Yes, but you can keep a spare key in that fake rock in your shrubbery,
yet Finale doesn't allow that.
You can even call a locksmith to get you into the house without breaking
a window should you lose your key, but Finale doesn't allow that,
either, and hasn't mentioned that they have made provisions to allow
that even if they go out of business.
So the two anti-theft devices are very different. And there are
software companies out there who have gone to the call-response
activation system who HAVE publicly announced that they have a mechanism
in place to free their software from their anti-piracy mechanism should
they go out of business, so what David Fenton is asking for is not only
reasonable, but is also a path other companies have already followed.
Not knowing any other list-members' financial status I also think it's
unfair to come down on anybody for complaining about the annual-update
Finale cost. I can very easily comprehend that people would complain
about it.
