Here's how I make large time signatures that go between staves or span several staves. It's a very flexible method which makes it easy to control the size and the placement of the time signatures:

1. Turn off time signature display in all staves.

2. Create a certain number of extra "time signature" staves. In staff attributes, make sure that nothing displays on these staves apart from the time signatures: make each one a zero-line staff, turn off everything in "items to display" apart from the time signatures and turn off display of rests in empty measures.

3. Choose the font and size of the time signatures: I use Engraver Time.

4. Now you can move each time signature up or down to where you need it by dragging on the handle of the corresponding "time signature" staff.

I apologize if this has been asked before, but my searches haven’t turned up much in the archives...

How does one create “cross-group time signatures”, such as those commonly seen in large-ensemble pieces?  I’m talking about the large time signatures that don’t just reside in one staff, but are exploded to cross over multiple staves.

Also, is there a “proper” name for this notational marking?

 Thanks,
