Hi Karen, Assuming you are talking about MTP/AV USB is grayed out in AMS? Sleep mode could cause this, while I don't put any of my machines to sleep. I only turn the monitors off. But if MTP/AV USB is grayed out in AMS, you can simply un/replug the USB connection, and it should reappear instantly. One thing to check, to be sure, is the MTP/AV USB ROM version. It should say 2.0.1 when you boot it up. Sorry, but I am not clear why this would help, unless you constantly rewire the back of MTP/AV USB. I do keep a few different AMS setups since I don't have my live rig connected all the time, and have a frequent clients who brings in own MIDI gear. Your ports question also made me wonder if I am not understanding your friend's problem.
