You've piqued my interest now. I have the same "grayed out in AMS after sleep" problem. For me, a reboot is much easier than unplug/replug USB, due to lack of easy access to the USB cable. However, that isn't why I'm writing.
I also use the Midi Express XT, and I'm wondering what version of Finale Karen uses. (It's Mac, right?) Before I got it last fall I was using a serial MTP II thru a GeeThree Stealth serial port. Starting with Fin06, whenever I playback from Finale, it floods the MIDI interface with messages. The flooding continues even after playback stops, and the only way to stop it is reset the interface. This happened both with the old serial interface and the newer USB interface. However, resetting the USB interface causes it to go gray in AMS, and I then have to reboot.
