To the wisdom of the list,

Time for a new pointing device. Would someone describe for me in a short statement the operating principle(s) of the cordless mouse beyond the obvious concept in its name?  What (is) are its most redeeming feature(s)? Many thanks from this old and  rather technically out of date Finale user.

A cordless mouse is pretty much what it sounds like. The mouse itself has a radio transmitter and a battery (mine has 2 AA cells) and otherwise looks exactly like a mouse, but without a wire. The receiver is plugged into the mouse port, so you still have a wire to your computer, or at least a dongle attached to a plug (unless you have a Bluetooth mouse on a Bluetooth-capable computer, where the receiver is built into the computer). Depending on the model, some mouses have a recharging stand, whereas some others need periodic battery replacement. I use 2 rechargeable AA cells, which lasted about 3 months between rechargings when fresh (getting down to about 6 weeks now)

Mine is the Logitech Cordless Click Plus, and I am entirely happy with it on my desktop computer. Five buttons plus a scroll wheel with a button, or seven controllers in all.

One of the teachers at school told me he was pranked by a student involving one of these devices. He was using a computer projection screen with a trackball to make notations on a diagram for the class, when suddenly the cursor started moving without him doing anything. He stared and said, "What the...?" as the cursor spelled out in red on screen "Hi Fred" and then "April Fool's!" The student had plugged the receiver into a spare USB port on the back of the computer before class and controlled it from his desk with his baseball cap over his hand. Everyone had a good laugh.
