Adding to Dennis's point about guessing, I would add this--to me it seemed as 
if linked parts created as much work in some aspects as it saved in other 
aspects.  Fortunately, I guessed right about the MM rest problem early on and 
posted it on the other forum...I must confess, however, that I returned 2007 
and am back to using 2006.  Perhaps my uses are just too basic, but I found the 
marginal cost of the linked parts thing to be far higher for my work than the 
marginal benefits were.  I am sure that others will find it a blessing for 
their work.

Just for the record, on a new file where I had the same problem, it was
indeed solved by creating MM rests (also by recreating the part
completely). I still find this behavior rather odd. How is one supposed to
guess this?
