You're not supposed to guess this -- it's part of the fun that
programmers have, putting little gotchas like that into a program and
then monitoring lists such as this and the makemusic forums to read all
the complaints. I can hear the guffaws around the old computer as yet
another person screams in frustration at this thing.
And I can also hear the moans and groans of the programmers as more and
more people pass on the secrets to solving the puzzle. Then they turn
to hiding more puzzling behavior in the version they're currently
working on.

Actually, I'll bet it's another of those "we ought to fix that"
programmer memos which gets overridden by the "screw that, rush it out
the door" marketing memos.
