Yep, theory homework is one animal, real music is another. I do remember something (probably from Hindemith's harmony book) about it's being permissible to double the third of a minor triad whereas it was forbidden to double the third of a major triad. I remember being ecstatic at discovering chez Ravi Shankar a system of melodic writing where that fourth DIDN'T have to go down and that seventh DIDN"T have to go up. As to whether or not it matters that Beethoven's first symphony violates Hindemith's rules of composition, who cares?
