Could you offer a citation for staff lines being removed? I just
checked my Durand scores (Ravel and Messiaen) and they do not
remove staff lines. What they often do is avoid having the beam
cross any staff lines, but when the beam crosses a staff line, the
staff line is visible inside the beam.

Maybe "often" was the wrong word to use there. Still being a poor
graduate student, my score library isn't enormous yet, so I can't
offer many examples without diving into the library at school. At
least one example has been provided though that does display this,
however.
Also, Igor Engraver, a notation program that a colleague removes
staff lines when creating French beams. Whether or not these are
"true" French beams, for what it's worth I can attest that they do
increase the readability of beamed notes.
