Well, I received it and installed it and am withholding judgement on it..
We still can't use measure number regions in the playback controls to define where we want playback to begin. This is unforgivable because in order to initiate playback from, for example, measure 347, which may well be defined as 4:18, we need to know that it's measure 347, which means we have to have Finale display the real measure numbers in the lower left of the screen, making it much harder to use the regions for separate movements. Of course we can still define them to be what we want, but have the program display their real numbers, but I find it a damned pain. I found it a damned pain in Fin2007 (the first one we couldn't use regions in the playback indicator) and I complained about it. Guess I'll have to complain again.
I find the new help files really are a large improvement on the previous ones, I'll grant them that. Once IE has opened on my computer (whoever it was that complained about Acrobat taking a long time to load sure never opened IE on my computer!) it's very responsive. Of course, I haven't really looked anything up in the help files yet, but they look nicer. Only when I actually have to lookup something new about this version will I know how helpful they really are. And it's easy to go back.
It seems as if there might be some neat stuff in this new version, but in my cursory playing around with it I see nothing which screams "Fantastic New Version!"
And with what we already know is still unfixed in this version from Finale2007, it is somewhat underwhelming.
But we can add an audio track to our files, now. I initially thought "What the . . .!" but I can see it being useful for those who work with music which in the 60s would have required a tape recorder to play the tape along with the music. I can see lots of uses for it. Just not really for me, at the present, so I'm not delighted that they included that but didn't fix problems which were introduced in Fin2007, to say nothing about long-standing bugs which may not have been fixed either.
I haven't checked to see if the percussion map black-hole has been fixed any, but given the lack of publicity of any such fix I doubt it.
And I sure would like to be able to use the defined measure numbers in the playback window!
