johannes, i would go for the singular in the example you initially gave; the example from the OED does however make sense in plural because there are several singers, or rather singer types, and therefore several tessituras. look at it by substituting ranges: the extremely high range (sing.) of the violin writing; the high ranges (pl.) of the vocal parts (BUT!... for a section of the same type of singers: the high range of the soprano part/parts).

also the negative is a bit clunky... i offer another version, which is not as smooth as it could be either, but the negative flows better.

Because of the extremely high tessitura of the violin writing, the editor has (the editors have) decided to not reproduce the pitch location exactly.
