Hmm. At least as far as flute goes your statement seems to be quite
at variance with my experience. Almost all pros that I deal with
use (or at least have available) a flute with a B extension.
Stiller gives the percentage as 25%, but at least among pros I
think it is much higher now. I routinely write low B for the flute
without ossias (and without comment from players).
Oh, most of the full-time flute players HAVE a low B instrument
available, but they hate it, and only pick it up to play the passage,
then switch back to their usual instrument at the first opportunity.
And of course none of them would be so unprofessional as to say
anything (unless asked, which I did.)
However none of the piccolo players I spoke to have anything but a
low D.
