Nobody I know has anything but low D on picc. None of them have anything good to say about piccs (or flutes for that matter) with extensions.

Hmm. At least as far as flute goes your statement seems to be quite at variance with my experience. Almost all pros that I deal with use (or at least have available) a flute with a B extension. Stiller gives the percentage as 25%, but at least among pros I think it is much higher now. I routinely write low B for the flute without ossias (and without comment from players).

I think that among flute players above the beginner / early-intermediate level, most people these days buy flutes with low B foot joints. I'm sure the percentage of low-B flutes is much higher than 25%.

But when pressed, they play the low B about 0% of the time -- for many people the low B serves more to help the highest B and C speak more clearly (that's what the gizmo key is for) as well as the extra mass of the larger foot joint helping to make a slightly more mellow tone to the flute overall.
