System Restore: right-click on My Computer, choose Properties. System Restore tab, check "Turn off System Restore on all drives". This is also where you can set the amount of space you want to give to System Restore, under the Settings button.
Indexing: Right-click on My Computer, choose Manage. Drill down to Services and Applications | Services. (OR Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services.) If Indexing is started, then stop it. To keep it from restarting, open Properties for Indexing and choose a startup type of Disabled. (I actually have mine set to Manual, which means "Don't start unless something asks you to," which seems to work fine as well.)
