The long download of the 2008b updater that I (probably irrationally)
had thought might have interfered with my email, in fact had nothing
to do with those problems. There were other Mac related issues - the
Mail app not resetting itself to new parameters included in a Leopard
update. This is now solved.
I have not yet tried trashing the prefs to resolve the blank tool
pallet issue. If anyone tries that, please report to the list.
