That of course supposes there is some level of taste which is some sort of threshold, implying that there is higher taste and lower taste which would be some sort of universally agreed upon delineator.

I think Barnum's quote would be better had he said (and it would more accurately reflect his own success): "No one ever went broke estimating the taste of the American people accurately."
