That's why we among the most hip in the jazz world mostly say "axe"
for any instrument-wind or otherwise. It doesn't often apply to
drums or voice, but it could! 8-)
My god, has that term come back?! It was in rampant use almost
exactly 50 years ago, in the USAF Band, if you were hep. (Which was
in the process of replacing "hip," which also seems to have come
back!)
