But this reminds me not of a joke but a true story.
We were in a very popular early music ensemble in a large music
school at a midwest university in the '70s. Our viola da gamba
player was very young and had spent her first year and a half in the
group more or less in a drug-induced haze, never EVER saying anything
spontaneously. The night that changed was memorable. We were on the
way back from an out of town gig and stopped at a donut shop for some
coffee. When we walked in the waitress asked, "Are you together?"
Alice spoke up and said, "I'm together. And they're with me!"
(OK, no wiseass comments about Alice's Restaurant, please!)
